Mt. Airy Day 1973

THE STORY BEHIND MT. AIRY DAY

Mt. Airy Day is not only a street festival of music, food, rides, vendors and innocent fun, it was originally created to bring together both East and West Mt Airy residents on either sides of the Germantown Avenue border and dividing line between areas. During the early 1970s, there was a lot of blight, graffiti and criminal activity on Germantown Avenue, the central commercial corridor, which degraded the quality of life that affected both East and West Mt. Airy residents. They remained within their own silos, rarely finding opportunities to interact with one another except at Sedgwick Playground which was one of the few spaces where residents on either side naturally interacted – young children played together, teens hung out and played basketball, and home of the Northwest Bantams football team and Cheerleading Squad that relocated to Mt. Airy.  Naturally, Sedgwick playground and that block of Germantown Avenue was the most logical location for the first Mt Airy Day festivals until it moved further down the avenue to where it is today – between Upsal and Johnson.
